4/25/12 Business part 3- Cost +

4/25/12 Business part 3- Cost +
Today was our last day of class I was really happy but I will miss this class I really enjoyed it a lot. This was by far one of the best classes I had here at UMKC. This class taught me a lot of things that I will use in my life. I came to class a little late so I don’t really know about the first part. I learned that you need to always “stick to your guns!” when it comes to your rate. You should never work for free in less you love and believe in it. You have to have a passion for it. Diversify; come up with different things to do. Find things that can make you money. If you’re a writer you can teach, be a publisher, or even be a consultant for some other business or company. One thing that I did know about that my teacher was teaching us was to always back up your work. You should always have a paper copy of everything because hard drivers can stop working and if you have a hard drive you should have two and keep one on another place so it can always be there. The last thing is to enjoy yourself you’re a business have fun and take vacation you can make it a deductible. You should also give to others because there will always be someone that need help with something. This was everything that we learned about making a business and I will be following this very soon because I want my own business.

4/23/12 Business part 2- How much does it cost to wake up?

4/23/12 Business part 2- How much does it cost to wake up?
In class we learned about how much it cost to wake up if you starting your own business. You started doing lots of different math and it was very inserting to learn about. And you should have an accountant so you can learn all the ins and outs of your business finance. We started to learn about marketing and how we should do it. The number one thing to do in marking yourself and your business is to believe in yourself because you won’t get on where if you can’t even do that. How will you get someone else to believe in you product if you can’t do the same for yourself.  It is good to always have a contract with whomever you doing business with but you don’t really need one for friends if you can trust them. There is so much that go’s in to starting a business; things that I really didn’t think of so I’m glad he was showing us this because I didn’t even know how to get started.

4/20/12 Business part 1

4/20/12 Business part 1
Today we started to learn that we should always have an income from different things and that was funny to me when he told use that because I been saying the same thing all my life. So my teacher should us how to start a business and I’m happy for that because I always wanted to start a business but didn’t really know where to start. So today he was giving use tools to having our own business. We need first need a plan this is what is it you want to do. Then the next things is to get a LLC-(limited liability corporation) this will make you a business and you should always do business in the state you live in first. After the start a website because that where most business and people look at first the internet. And don’t forget to get cards to pass out because that’s another way of getting your business into the public. These just the first few steps the learned today for starting a business and I find them useful to know.

4/18/12 Resume

4/18/12 Resume
Today we learned that when doing a Resume one of the most important part of it is the cover letter. It’s important because that’s the part that you write just for the job you are giving you resume to. It show that you know something about the job and showing them a little bit about yourself and why you are qualified to have the job. We learned the whole format for a cover letter and what to put in it because most people put the something every time like (I would, I could). In a cover letter you need to put things like (I will, I can) in it. There should be 3-4 paragraph and 2-3 sentences in you cover letter. The first is your hook the, Hey You! In this paragraph you should tell a story about the company and how it relates to you with vivid word pictures. In the Second paragraph is the, You Want? You address the job and tell what needs to be done. In the Third paragraph is the, I Got! Tell about your skills for the job, I’m going to get the job done and this is how you going to do it. In the Fourth paragraph is the buy it now and you should always end with that. Learn all of this for my cover letter is good because I never put a cover letter with my resumes because I never really know how to do one. I will use this advice for the future because I’m sending a resume this weekend and I hope it a good one for them to look at.

1) Intro. the threat- stronger, Hey you!, power
2) Demonstrate that the audience is at risk- decision

4) Should the audience- they can perform the solution.

Then we started to go more into other different categories of this Fear apple

4/13/12 McDonalds Commercials Part 2

4/13/12 McDonalds Commercials Part 2

We still were on the subject about McDonalds and the years. We began to go into the 80’s and the modern day and age. We now know that McDonalds has a lot of power and they now own the world, and everything in it.  We learn a lot about McDonalds and everything they did to get where they are today. I will say they seem like they could stay on top.

We now have to do another commercial but on McDonalds in the year 2050. It is our view on what we see it looking like and being like in that year.

4/11/12 McDonalds Commercials Part 1

4/11/12 McDonalds Commercials Part 1

We turned in our homework for the car commercials on the car named 2020 go. We have 7 classes left so I hope I’m at ever one because I don’t want to miss no more of them.

Today in class we started to talk about McDonald’s commercials and the history of them. We started from the beginning of them and moved through the years and the different changes that they want through. We saw the changes from the different foods, styles of their designs, and the changes in the people. In the different commercials McDonalds tried to reach a different type of audience’s member like kids, old people, moms, dads, ect.

4/6/12 Car Commercials of the passed part 2

4/6/12 Car Commercials of the passed part 2
We talked about how they sold the cars to show that the car is a reflection of you. It was your identity. Most of the things in these commercials were not event really about the car about was it can do. When the years started to passed that’s when car commercials start to tell a story because that’s what’s grabs the attach of the audience. We learn that studies show that people learn more we they are laughing. That’s why stories came back to commercials for the entertainment.  Our home work for next week is to come up with our owe Car commercial. I hope I can pull this off because I seem like it could be a fun homework assignment.

4/4/12 Car Commercials of the 50’s and 60’s

4/4/12 Car Commercials of the 50’s and 60’s
We talked about the evolution of car ads and how it was loyalty in brands. In these car ads didn’t really show how it was dependable, long-lasting, and quality built, made for a family. These car ads sold the look for sex and they look like a kid’s toy so kids like them also. We mostly looked at car commercials in class.

4/2/12 TV Commercials

4/2/12 TV Commercials
Today we did the count down for the amount of time we had left in the class. It was four weeks 12 class and 550 minutes. 4 weeks may same long but I bet it will fly by like that.
Today we went over power and change and talked about dual-code, words, emotions, lingo, etc… we learn that those things are the stones to a story.  We also started to talk about TV commercials of the 50 and what led up to them. We did this in a time line that I thought was very successful in the information that was given.  It showed the parents wanted to give their children more because they were able to do it at that point. We also a level chart we made that show the needs of the parents, children, and the grandparents. This chart show that the children and grandparents where at the same point in their lives and the parents was at a completely different point.

3/21/12 A.I.D.A/ Attention

3/21/12 A.I.D.A/ Attention

We talked about A.I.D.A and what it means Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action. We started to talked about attention and the different quotes we use to get the attention from the audience. Some quotes were “Hey, you!”, “Buy it now!”, You won’t?”, “I’ve got!”. These were some quotes we can use to get through the W.I.F.F.M.  We so can use bright light, sexy food, noses, smells, signs, offer, short, trip, water balloon, peer pressure. We you selling your product you have to stand out from the crowed and be bold. That’s why you need to know your audience and break the W.I.F.F.M but you only have 9.10sec before their W.I.F.F.M close again.

3/14/12 Brands

3/14/12 Brands

We started too talked about the different brands that we used over the course of one day. I learned that I use a lot of different products every day. And in the time period of 30mins I use like 10 to 15 things. We learn that the people between the ages of 8-4 want to buy everything they see and the things that interest them. The ages 18-30 is where you start to get into brands and keep them for the rest of their life until they die.

3/12/12 Selling to People (Ripping them off)

3/12/12 Selling to People (Ripping them off)

We had a task to write down food that we seen over the weekend. Like organic, fresh, grown-up, 100 celeries, difference between names of same food.  We talked about the dos and don’ts of language to translate for the audience the do’s are, create emotion, simply, focused, concise. The don’ts are cliché’s, soft language, and double-speak, betray your audience. And our homework for next class was to look out for all the barns we use in one day.  We also learned about F.A.B. because you always sale the benefits. F.A.B. means Features- common among like items, Attributes- specific items, and Benefits- power.

3/9/12 Soft Language

3/9/12 Soft Language

We turned in the first Act for our radio show but I didn’t turn mine in to the next class. We learned that “Words are our most powerful drug”. The Audience they want some type of power. We need to sell it to them in a story, don’t just give it to them are you will have nothing left yourself, lie to sell what you need and want the audience to have from you and your stories, there is a Dark side to stories.  We learned the “Words can make us feel in power”.

3/7/12 Abstract and Concrete

3/7/12 Abstract and Concrete

We contain to talk about abstract and that it means to tell and is about love. Concrete and that it mean show and fluffy puppy, tiny, happy. They we started to talked how to make things more memorable like if we can see it and if it has emotion. We learned about how to break down things.

·         Asset- already have

·         Investment- hope to have

·         Security- more guaranteed

·         Equity- owner ship, return on an investment

·         Stock- narrow down

·         Common stock- we go out

We also learned that we should use one word stories like 911, Nixon, bounties. And two words like world’s fair, lady gaga, and cold war. Don’t do the work make them do the work for you. And we learned about S.A.F.E.S.T. - Statistics, Analogies, Facts, Examples, Stories, and Testimonials.

3/5/12 Words

3/5/12 Words

In today’s class we were talking about words that and how we could sell using them and the different things that goes into that. I learned that you have 2.3 seconds to sell to your audience because that’s how long you have their attention until they look for something else. Like when you are searching the web and the pages don’t load right way most people click another page and go look for something else. We also learned that we should not use slang and to avoid using stereotypes.  We talk about abstract and concrete. Abstract you tell, concepts, ism and values. Concrete you show, illustrations, religion and honesty.

2/29/12 War of the Worlds

2/29/12 War of the Worlds

We were talking about the different radio station and how it was one of the main sources of music and for people to hear what was going on in the world at that time. We listen to a radio broadcast from Orson Wells called War of the Worlds. It was a broadcast that many people thought was real and thought that aliens came from outer space. That’s caused lots of people to panic. In the radio broadcast you could hear echo’s of emotion, it didn’t sound like it was scripted, they repeated names so you could know who people where. Lots of people where made when they found out that it were a Halloween prank.  We also got our assignments to make our own radio projects.

2/24/14 Improve:

2/24/14 Improve:
Today we talked about Dialog in that we got into knowing more Improve and how it uses it right. 1 read it out aloud, 2 when read it aloud then 3 listen to the dialog to know that it works 4 get used to having people seeing it, 5 No log passages it put them to sleep, 6 no bad dialog because it will make the audience tone it out, 7 distinctive dialog give each character a voice, 8 when you create your character get into them, 9 speak their lingo like their career and give them their own phrases, 10 cut dialog that doesn’t serve a purpose, and their stories, 12 avoid stereotypes, 13 don’t use slang, and last 14 model others go out and look at others screen plays and going to look at what they do. Use it as a template but don’t copy it.

2/22/12 Full Metal Jacket/ Barton Fink

2/22/12
Today we talked about more dialog but this day we took it to looking at scenes from two different movies. We look at Full Metal Jacket with the scene where they was in the army barracks and the captain was trying to break them in. that’s where we meet some of the characters that would end up being the main characters. We also saw their personalities and who their characters are all about in the movie. Some characters look like they will clash in the movie at some point in time. After we looked at Full Metal Jacket we looked at two different scenes from Barton Fink. In this movie we saw how the power switch from one person to the other to get what they each wanted. A scene would start off with one person in charger and leading the scene but a simple word or discussion would flip it to be the other person has the power and this happens a lot in this movie.

2/20/12 Dialog

2/20/12 Dialog
Everything is all about the Dialog I the story. This is what makes or breaks any story. Dialog is what sells a story. The dialog has many stories, it moves the story along, we also ask what is so important and why do we use it. The information is the story.  There are also many different mistakes you can make when using Dialog in that story that it is important to know some of the mistakes with Dialog. Some are too much monologging, sounds too real meaning the fakeness will come out and the grammar shortcuts and also complete interaction. Using someone name to often, telling me what I already know, and everyone sounding alike because we should not sound alike we all have many differences between us like our education, culture, accents, age race, gender, etc… Dialog is really one of the most important parts of a story it’s what keep people wanting more for it.

2/17/12 Pave the Planet

2/17/12 Pave the Planet
I came to class a little late but I they were finishing up talking about the 10 stories in the world. After we finished up on that we started to talk about Creativity. We start talking about 1st we talked about hunt and gather in new unused places. When looking for new ideas look in different groups of people, dreams, brain, newspaper, news, conspiracy theories, and religion. 2nd Play whit it, witch play with an idea and find a message. 3rd Let it stew meaning walk away from your idea for a while, like sticking it a draw and letting you gather more ideas. 4th Eureka you have your great idea grab it, own it, and run with it. 5th Just do it is when you take your story and put it out there and not just let it go or do nothing with it. We are our biggest enemies and we bring ourselves down. We need to get our ideas out there.

2/9/12 The Three Little Pigs

2/9/12 The Three Little Pigs
In class today we continued to talk about the three little pigs and the remake stories we were coming up with. Some of the name we came up with was brick pig, straw pig, stick pig, wolf, monkey, girl pig, mama pig and dad pig. We talked about the different stories that we could have with the different characters this cast. We talked about who we wanted as the antagonist and protagonist and what they roles will be as that character. We use the 3 act and the Maslow to walk us through the different stories. I really enjoyed hearing the different ideas about the different stories when everyone started to put their input into it. We finally came up with our mane characters for our story the wolf and monkey. Our homework for the next class is to write a story with wolf as the protagonist and the monkey as the antagonist. Wolf will have and addiction to eating pigs and is trying to stop but monkey is really making it have for him to stop eating the pigs.

2/6/12 External and Internal/ 3 Act Structure

2/6/12 External and Internal/ 3 Act Structure
In class we learned about the pressure about the external and internal in the characters that’s in a story. Like having a broken leg will be considered external because it is something you can see and feel on the outside. The thought of something like a broken is consider internal because you will always be thinking about “what if” it happens and when is it going to happen. We talk about anything that’s internal is worst because it’s something dealing with yourself and you are your biggest antagonist. With I can agree with because just the thought of the broken leg is painful enough. It is the unknown and the infinite possibilities. All conflict is a struggle of power with the “IF ONLY” and the “What IF”. We also learn about the 3 act structure and the way it like it kind of looks like a bass ball diamond. Its start with the hook and introduction with the pros and cons. It’s also with the back story of the conflict of the characters. First the act break this is when life gets bad for the characters. The Second is where it gets worse for the character because they have the face the internal conflict before moving on. And third is where they face the external before they reach the end. And lastly the resolution is what come quick and it the last change to sell the massage. That’s 3 act structures.

2/3/12 Fact Check/ Joe Campbell

2/3/12 Fact Check/ Joe Campbell
In class we learned about Fact Check and Joe Campbell Hero Journey. Fact Check doesn’t write about cops, doctors, fireman, lawyers, nurses… if you never talked to anyone in that profession. Because you will get people that say that’s not true. Some movies don’t really work if you don’t know your facts. Ask what their lingo is, ask someone about the facts they have about their careers, Google the careers if you don’t really Know, lots of research, and the process. We also talked about Joe Campbell Hero’s Journey there was 5 steps. They began with 1) Call to adventure, with this the individual have to leave home and they will have to accept and not decline because that what kick off the movie. 2) Road of trials in this they will succeed or fail. 3) Achieve their goals is self-knowledge. 4) Return to the real world. 5) Application of their knowledge and what they do with it. This is what we talked about in class.

1/30/12 Active vs. Passive

1/30/12 Active vs. Passive
Today we talked about active and passive. Active is trying to change the situation and passive just go along with the flow. We have to make sure that you always make your character an active character. Motivation is always ask why? Then we learned about the Maslow chart and the different levels of it. The levels on the chart had five different levels to it so you could follow along with it.

1/27/12 Finding Original Characters

Today in class we talked about Finding Original Characters the protagonist vs. the antagonist. The protagonist drives the story and sometimes that’s not always a good thing. The Antagonist tries to stop the protagonist from gaining their power.  That what makes the story because they both want the power and try to stop the other form getting it because then both can’t have power. They don’t always want the same power. They just want their own type of power. Finding a character where people tend not to look are original characters. We learned that we should not make our characters just like our audience, make them relate to the audience. And because of this the audience will not look for the massages. You are the most powerful antagonist because it is your own fares that you are fighting.

She is a very good dancer when she in not picking on the other girls in class when they don’t listen to her. She is a 3rd grader and loving it.

Connecting to the audience

It was an eventful day because I got my teeth pulled and I took a pill and it makes you sleepy but I went to class because I didn’t want to miss any more days but I didn’t really realized that I was in the wrong class I had got my days mix up. When I realized that I quickly got up and went to my right class I was very late but I still went because I also had to turn in my doctors note to my teacher. When I got to class they were going over things that we learned from other classes.  I copied down the different built points they were going over. The talked about the story, the message, the change, and the reason why? The story is what it is. They talked about power, and the language of others. We started to talked about the best way to connect to the audience is to make changes in it and create the identity of the story and what it is all about.

Stories that are easy to...

In class I learned that stories can be put together like instructions. Stories are like blue prints, it’s a language by always thinking of the audience first. The blue print of the story is the recipes that consist of 2 characters, 1 conflict, and 1 resolution. Stories are all universal; they have 10 types of stories. After putting together a story you have to sell it. In stories you need to get to the point you need to get to the idea of the story. So you don’t be too overawed with too many ideas. You need to just stick to the story. I learned that the reason why we tell stories is because they are easy to remember, easy to understand, easy to believe, and also easy to share. Stories are to be attention getters.

UCA

My friends was getting in to it, I was not really trying to get in the middle of it but one of them thought she was running everything and she thought that she could say what she wanted to whoever and they was just going to listen but it back fired on her. So she call her boyfriend to bring her guy because no one was listing to what she had to say because she was the one in the wrong fighting over something that was not even her business and bring others into something that had nothing to do it her or them. So something in me snapped because she is one of my good friends but when she started too talked about bringing a gun even though I didn’t think she was that serious. But the fact that she was even talking about the gun made be very mad and I told her that guns are for weak people and if you had a problem you should never torn to a gun because it shows how weak your really are. I told her this for too reason one because I know it was going to make her mad but she really was making me made at this point and I know that it was wrong for me to do it just for that reason. The 2nd reason is because too many people in my family are dying from weak people using guns and not talking their problems out.

The Story

We did an over view of why The Story is very important to the audience because it’s about the massage, change and why? But we also learned that the story has more to it and what the core if it is. The Core has lots of different parts to it. The most important of the story is the Characters. The next important part is the Conflict is the next best part because it’s all about the problem.  The Resolution is important to the story also because it has to make scene and it bring the story to an end.  This is all a part of the first level creativity. There should always be at least 2 characters in a story one conflict and one resolution.  And lastly I learn about UCA which stands for (You See A?).  This is one of the ways you can find a story somewhere.

Always think of the audience first

Always think of the audience first that was the big topic of the day. I learned a lot in class about different facts about the audience. I learn that 60% of people have literacy. To me I’m not really surprise about the percentages because there are a lot of different people in this world with some type of disabilities. We also talked about the reading skills of the audience. They read on an average of a 5th grade level. I think that this is true because when I read I want to just read through everything quickly and get it over. I want the story to grab my attention fast to keep me interested.  That’s what’s bring be to my next topic about what we learned, we learned that we should always keep what we write short and sweet. Keeping it short and sweet will keep the audience attention. Every word has a meaning and putting them together will tell a story. This class is becoming more and more inserting for me and I really like it.

First day of class

My first day of my Writhing for the media class went well. I was not really sure what to expect in this class because it was a WI class and that’s means it’s a (Writing Intensive) class. I’m not a very good writer so I really was not looking forward to this class. When class starting I started to think this was going to be something different. My teacher has a personality of his own and I like that because he can keep your attaching. We first got all the information for the class and that when we learn we had to make blogs in this class. I was thinking to myself I never really did a blog before so I didn’t know what to do on a blog. After the high lights of this class we started talking about GOALS AND POWER. We talked about how it’s used like “I want Power” its evil but it can also be powerful. We talked about the STORY as a mean to affect people by telling jokes, tales, and stories about other people etc.  We also learn about the WIIFM (what’s in it for me). The WIIFM is what people think about every day when talking or listing to someone else about some type of information. You only start listing when you can pick out something said that will benefit our selves. When writing a STORY you have to think about the different topics.  The topics of a STORY are the message, change, and why.  The first day of class went very well. Can’t wait to learn more
